How to Stop Desktop.ini

Desktop.ini is a Windows system file created by Microsoft. The file stores information about customized folders. You can stop, or delete, the Desktop.ini file. However, any customization that you made to your folders, such as names and icons, will be reset to the system defaults. Nevertheless, if you choose to delete the file, you can do so using the Windows Command Prompt.

  • Instructions
  1. Click "Start," type "cmd" into the search field and press "Enter" to open the Command Prompt.
  2. Type "del desktop.ini" into the Command Prompt and press "Enter."
  3. Type "exit" into the Command Prompt and press "Enter." The Command Prompt closes.
